Men's Gymnastics Places Second in New England Invitational Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 12, 2006 – Temple University won the 2006 New England Men’s Gymnastics Invitational Championships at Springfield College’s Blake Arena earlier this afternoon with a score of 202.450. The Owls were led by sophomore Luke Vexler who placed in five events en route to winning the all-around competition with a score of 50.000. Vexler was victorious in the vault and placed third in the high bar with scores of 9.200 and 8.250, respectively.

Temple put on a dominant performance, coming away with first-place finishes in five of the six events. Owl sophomore Alex Gorski won the floor exercise with a score of 8.750. Also winning for Temple were; junior Dan Berlin in the pommel horse (8.650), Sterling Kramer in the parallel bars (8.750), and Brian Forquer in the high bar (8.400).

Springfield College put on a good showing by placing second with a score of 185.200. The Pride was able to edge out MIT by a mere 1.300 points. Springfield College senior Andrew Malaby (West Warwick, R.I.) continued his impressive season with a win on the rings and a fourth place finish in the vault with scores of 8.750 and 8.800, respectively. Also placing for the Pride were sophomores Matthew Davis (Southboro, Mass.), who finished fifth in the pommel horse with a score of 8.250 and Steven Swider (Altamount, N.Y.), who finished third in the all-around competition with a score of 46.250.

MIT junior Brad Sutton placed third in the pommel horse with a score of 8.500, while freshman Boris Rasin came away with fourth place in the all-around competition, scoring a total of 45.750 points. SUNY-Brockport senior Karl Jaanimagi finished 12th in the high bar and 13th in the all-around competition with scores of 7.150 and 41.650, respectively, for Brockport’s best finishes. University of Vermont senior Ian Anderson placed sixth in pommel horse with a score of 7.900. Gym & More club gymnast RJ Helflin placed in five events, including a second place finish in the all-around competition with a score of 48.950.
