Willimantic, Conn. - November 21, 2009 - Sophomore Kelly Murphy netted a team-best 14 points, and sophomore Kelly Slattery added 13, but the Springfield College women's basketball team fell to regional-power Bowdoin College, 88-60, in the Eastern Connecticut Invitational on Saturday evening.
Bowdoin is now 1-0, while Springfield falls to 1-1.
Bowdoin led 31-28 after SC freshman Meghan Biondolillo hit a three-pointer with four minutes to go in the first half, but Bowdoin then outscored the Pride, 7-2, to take a 38-30 lead at the intermission.
With 16:46 to go in the second half, it was a 7-point game at 46-39 after Murphy hit a three for the Pride. But that was as close as SC would get. The lead grew to as many as 28 on three occasions later on, including the final margin.
Biondolillo was next in line in the SC scoring parade with nine points. Junior center Amelia Sapowsky scored seven.
Bowdoin won the rebounding battle, 39-26. Sapowsky led SC with six boards. Sapowsky was also the assist leader for the Pride with four.
On Sunday, Springfield will play Manhattanville in the consolation game at 1:00 pm.
