In his first season with the women's program, Coffin made an immediate impact. He led the Pride to seven wins, the most for the program in a season since the 1996 squad captured 10 victories. For the men's team, Coffin brought the Pride back to the NEWMAC Tournament where it bowed out in the semifinals.
In the 2012-2013 season, Women's tennis team traveled to Puerto Rico, first any team has traveled outside the country for Spring Break.
In August of 2012, Coach Coffin attended the world-renown Dennis Van Der Meer Tennis Acadmey in Hilton Head, S.C. During his time there, Coffin spent over forty on-court hours learning aspects of tennis teaching, evalution, stroke production, corrections, and testing. He went on to recieve a certificate of advanced level coaching and is a part of the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR).
Coffin returned to Springfield College where he earned his master’s degree in physical education in 2001. In his two years at SC, he concentrated in athletic administration and assisted the women’s tennis program.
Coffin has accumulated a wealth of experience in coaching tennis as well as in athletic administration since then.
Coffin also currently teaches physical education and health to students in grades 6 through 9 at the New Leadership Charter School in Springfield, Mass. He is also the middle school’s boys’ basketball coach, and an 8th grade class advisor at New Leadership, and has been so since 2007.
Along the way in his career, Toby was also the varsity girls’ tennis coach at Cathedral High in Springfield from 2007 through 2010, was the varsity boys’ tennis coach at Minnechaug High School in Wilbraham from 2000 to 2003, was a tennis instructor at the Ludlow Tennis Club from 2007 to the present, and was a tennis camp instructor at Springfield College in 2007 and 2008.
From 2003 to 2007, Coffin had been the Director of Athletics at The MacDuffie School in Springfield. He directed all aspects of the athletic department, including planning, organizing, scheduling, budgeting, hiring, and evaluation of 15 coaches. In addition, he coached varsity boys’ basketball, middle school boys’ soccer, JV boys’ basketball, and varsity boys’ tennis at MacDuffie.
From 2001 to 2003, Coffin taught physical education and health to students in grades K-10 in the Hatfield Public Schools in Hatfield, Mass. He also coached varsity girls’ soccer to a league title in the first year of the team’s existence.
From 1993 to 1999, he was the Director of Athletics at the Calverton School in Huntingtown, Maryland. While there, he was also the Physical Education Chair, and coached varsity soccer, varsity boys’ basketball, and implemented varsity co-ed tennis.
Coffin began his career as a physical education teacher at The Key School in Annapolis, Md. from 1991 to 1993, where he coached middle school co-ed soccer.
Coffin began his college education at Herkimer County Community College in Herkimer, N.Y. where he earned an associate’s degree in science in 1988. He moved on to SUNY Cortland in Cortland, N.Y. where he received a bachelor of science degree in physical education in 1990.
Toby and his wife, Cheryl, reside in Wilbraham with his step-children Nicole and Shawn St. Marie.
