Baseball Holds Off Coast Guard, 13-10, In NEWMAC Finale
NEW LONDON, CONN., April 23, 2003 -- Springfield College jumped out to a 10-0 lead after three and a half innings and held off a late Coast Guard rally for a 13-10 win in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game Wednesday afternoon.
SC (13-12, 8-4 NEWMAC) scored three runs in the second with sophomore
Michael Judge (Chatham, N.J.) delivering an RBI triple, and freshman
Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore
Mike Burns (Wynanstkill, N.Y.) adding sacrifice flies.
The Pride scored six more runs on six hits in the top of the third as junior
Toby Cole (Blue Hill, Maine) had a single and a two-run double in the inning. Yvon had an RBI single and seniors
Dave Folli (Endicott, N.Y.) and
Brian Puchalski (South Deerfield, Mass.) added back-to-back RBI doubles.
After the Pride added an unearned run in the fourth, Coast Guard finally got on the board as Aaron Meredith delivered an a two-run single.
The Bears closed to within 10-6 with four runs in the sixth as Ryan Eldredge hit a solo homerun while Ryan Crose, Josh Nelson and Brian Steuerwald also added RBI's.
Springfield added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh as Burns had and RBI single and sophomore
Matt Basteri (Melrose, Mass.) had and RBI triple for a 12-6 lead.
Coast Guard entered the ninth down 13-7, but scored three runs as Meredith had an RBI double, Steuerwald added an RBI single and Aaron Holler was walked with the bases loaded.
Puchalski was 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI for Springfield (13-12, 8-4).
