Men's Swimming Places Third At NEWMAC Championship
, March 3, 2002 - - Springfield College freshman Louis Arruda (West Warwick, R.I.)
shattered two individual event meet records, and also posted NCAA national provisional qualifying in a pair of events to lead the Pride to a third place finish at this weekend's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Balfour Natatorium.
Arruda, who was named NEWMAC Swimmer of the Year following the meet, captured multiple-event victories in the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.19), 500-yard freestyle (4:45.45), and 200-yard freestyle (1:43.05). Arruda's times in the 200 free, and 500 free shattered previous meet records, while his times in the 200 fly, and 200 free met NCAA national provisional qualifying standards.
Senior Daniel Bartholomew (Willits, Calif.)
joined Arruda on the NEWMAC All-Conference Team after winning the 3-meter diving event (397.95). Bartholomew's score also qualified him provisionally for the NCAA Division III national championship later this month at Miami, Ohio.
Springfield tallied 615.5 points to place behind MIT (926), and Babson College (698). United States Coast Guard Academy (575), Clark University (375.5), WPI (291), and Wheaton College (253) rounded out the remainder of the seven-team field.

Peter Avdoulos is regarded as one of the top diving coaches in the nation, and will enter his 29th season as the diving coach for both the men's and women's programs in 2013-2014.
