Women's Tennis Clips Messiah, 5-4

Hilton Head, S.C. - March 18, 2014 - The Springfield College women's tennis team earned a 5-4 victory over Messiah College on Tuesday afternoon as it picked up four wins in singles play.

Trailing 2-1 after doubles play, despite an 8-2 win at the No. 1 spot by Stephanie Foster (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.), the Pride battled back with four wins in singles action to earn a 5-4 victory.

Melanie Thulin (Manchester Center, Vt.) cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 3, while Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) also won in straight sets at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-3 decision.

Springfield's key victories came from Foster and Kelsey Whelpley (Mastic Beach, N.Y.), as each rallied from dropping the first set to win in three. Foster took No. 4 by the score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, while Whelpley rebounded to a 6-2 loss in the first to cruise to a 6-3, 6-0 win.
