Three Earn NEWMAC Weekly Swimming and Diving Honors

Springfield College Swimming and Diving Springfield, Mass. - November 22, 2010 - The trio of Brian Sobel, Kellie Pennington, and Jennifer Thompson were recognized for their efforts over the weekend as they took home New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekly honors. Sobel was tabbed the NEWMAC Men's Diver of the Week, while Pennington earned NEWMAC Women's Co-Swimmer of the Week, and Thompson was selected as the NEWMAC Women's Diver of the Week.

Sobel returned to the diving boards this week and dominated as he swept the competition in a pair of meets. In Saturday's tri-meet with Wheaton and Keene State, the Stratford, Conn. native took first in the one-meter with a 288.90 before totaling a 301.95 in the three-meter. On Sunday's win over Middlebury, the two-time reigning NEWMAC Diver of the Year took the one meter event with a score of 334.95 and the three meter event with a score of 328.28. Sobel's score in the one-meter was over 100 points higher than the second-place finisher as he re-established his school record on the one-meter board.

Pennington led Springfield to wins over Wheaton, Keene State, and Middlebury as she continued her early success this season. In Saturday's tri-meet, the freshman sprinted to victory in the 50 free with a 23.72 and out-touched the competition in the 100 fly for a win in 59.55. Against Middlebury on Sunday, Pennington continued her winning ways, grabbing victories in the 100 yard butterfly (58.29), the 100 yard freestyle (52.94), and the 50 yard butterfly (26.18). Pennington was also on the winning 200 free relay that touched in 1:39.47. This marks the second time this year that the Monson, Mass. native has earned the weekly award.

Thompson continued her impressive start of her collegiate career as she had another successful weekend in the diving events. In a tri-meet with Keene State and Wheaton, the first-year won the one-meter with a 244.70 and also won the three-meter with a 232.60. In Sunday's win over Middlebury, In diving, the Cheshire, Conn. product finished with a score of 245.17 to win the one-meter before posting a 249.30 in the three meter event for the sweep.
