Women's Tennis Closes Out Remarkable Season With 5-4 Loss to Endicott

Ariana Shemms Springfield, Mass. - April 16, 2014 - The Springfield College women's tennis team narrowly fell in its final match of the season, 5-4 to visiting Endicott on Wednesday, but the young team finished a remarkable season.

Springfield closes out the season with a record of 10-8, the best season under head coach Toby Coffin, who is in his third season at the helm. It's also the best season for the Pride since the 1996 squad also won 10 matches.

Springfield took two out of three matches in doubles play. At No. 2 doubles, Mel Thulin (Manchester Center, Vt.) and Arianna Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) won by a score of 8-3 while the third doubles duo of Sydney Streimer (Mystic, Conn.) and Alanna Grady (Springfield, Mass.) earned an 8-4 win.

The Pride won two singles matches, led by Shemms who earned a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win at fifth singles. Streimer also won for Springfield, taking No. 2 singles by a score of 6-4, 6-3.

Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) put up a fight at No. 1 singles, taking Endicott's Amy Heacox to three sets (2-6, 6-4, 6-3). London won the first, before falling in the next two.
