SPRINGFIELD, Mass., January 11, 2006 - Springfield College senior Alicia Hart (West Hartford, Conn.) finished first in the 100 butterfly (1:03.05), took second in the 50 freestyle (26.07), and was the third leg of the Pride’s winning 200 medley relay team (1:56.00) as SC defeated Smith College, 155-141, on Wednesday afternoon, January 11, at the Art Linkletter Natatorium.
Joining Hart on SC’s winning 200 medley relay squad was freshman Moira Price (Berkeley Heights, N.J.), sophomore Emily Sheahan (Erin, N.Y.), and junior Julianne McCormick (East Walpole, Mass.). Price and Sheahan also picked up individual victories in the meet, as Price took first in the 100 free (56.77), and Sheahan won the 100 breaststroke event (1:15.18).
Smith College sophomore Shanti Freitas won both the diving events for the Pioneers on the afternoon, taking first on the one-meter board with a 267.68 score, and first on the three-meter board with a score of 281.40.
Other individual winners for SC included senior All-American Sarah Strout (Boothbay, Maine) in the 200 free (2:02.45), senior tri-captain and reigning Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Swimmer of the Week Emily Phillips (North Windham, Conn.) in the 100 backstroke (1:04.88), junior Meaghan O’Hara (Bedford, N.H.) in the 50 free (26.03), freshman Kristen Schadow (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) in the 200 back (2:18.07), and junior Brittany Hargis (East Lyme, Conn.) in the 200 breast (2:44.66).
SC improves its overall record to 5-4 on the season, as Smith drops to 0-3. The Pride will next travel to NYU for a meet on Saturday afternoon, January 14, in a 1 p.m. start. SC will then host MIT on Sunday afternoon, January 15, also in a 1 p.m. starting time.
