Williamstown, Mass. -- Jan. 7, 2012 -- The Springfield College wrestling team traveled to the Williams Invitational and came away with a convincing victory in the nine-team field, scoring 137 points earlier today. Junior 141-pounder Joe Grippi, one of three individual SC champions, was named the invitational's Wrestler of the Match.
Grippi, a native of Bedford Hills, N.Y., is currently ranked #8 nationally in the 141-lb. weight class. He is also ranked #1 in the New England Wrestling Association poll. He defeated Williams' Ces Antista in the championship match by a score of 4-1.
As a team, Springfield ran away from the competition by scoring 137 points. Host Williams came in second with 88 points, followed by Roger Williams with 75.5, Southern Maine with 71.5, NYU (66), MIT (54.5), Simpson (38.5), Plymouth State (31), and STCC (14.5).
The Pride produced two other champions in this field. They were senior Ryan McGilvray (Manalapan, N.J.) in the 157-pound weight class, and junior Michael Fish (Middletown, N.J.) in the 174-pound weight class. McGilvray is also currently ranked #1 in New England at 157.
Four other members of the Pride took seconds. They were freshman Derek Adams (Charlestown, R.I.) at the 133-pound weight class, freshman Eric Hamrick (Collingswood, N.J.) in the 149-pound class, senior Ron Thompson (Stamford, Conn.) at 174, and senior John Gabordi (Ledyard, Conn.) at heavyweight.
Three others from SC placed third. They were sophomore Victor Ekpenyong (Middletown, Conn.) at 125, senior Jesse Sgaglione (No. Massapequa, N.Y.) at 133, and senior Jeff Brodeur (Lanesboro, Mass.) at 197.
One other placed fourth, and that was junior Nick Camera (No. Massapequa, N.Y.).
Next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13-14, Springfield will compete at the Budd Whitehill Invitational at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
