Women's Swimming & Diving Wins Five Titles on Day Two of NEWMAC Championship; Sets School Record in 400 Medley Relay

Ashleigh Monroe Worcester, Mass. - February 21, 2014 - The Springfield College women's swimming & diving team won five of the six events on Friday in day two of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship, hosted by WPI.

The big win for Springfield was the last one of the day as the 400 medley relay team set a new school record. The winning team of Kellie Pennington (Monson, Mass.), Kelsey Poole (Westfield, Mass.), Emily Medeiros (Wakefield, Mass.) and Christiana Greco (Wilbraham, Mass.) swam a combined time of 3:49.33. It was a tight race, but Greco knotted things up with MIT in the third leg and Pennington finished strong as the anchor leg to give the Pride a two-second victory. The time broke the old school record of 3:50.52, held since 2009.

MIT leads the 10-team field after two days of competition with a team score of 505. Springfield holds second place with a score of 446 and Wellesley stands in third at 309 while Wheaton (239) and WPI (233) round out the top five. Coast Guard (222) sits in sixth while Mount Holyoke (198), Clark (183), Smith (155) and Babson (122) round out the team scoring.

Ashleigh Monroe (Southbury, Conn.) had an impressive come-from-behind victory in the 500 free, swimming a winning time of 4:59.30 for Springfield's first win of the day. The sophomore was just 0.47 seconds off the school record, which has stood since 1991. After trailing early on, Monroe made a late push to earn the victory, touching 0.33 seconds ahead of the second place finisher from MIT. The sophomore's time met NCAA "B" cut standards.

Callie Phillips (East Longmeadow, Mass.) gave the Pride back-to-back wins, using a strong finish to take the 200 IM title. The sophomore swam a time of 2:08.11, taking the lead in the second lap and never looking back. She beat the second place finisher by more than a second.

Pennington swam a winning time of 23.11 in the 50 free to give the Pride three-straight wins. Her time was just 0.02 seconds off the meet record which she has owned since 2012 and it ties the WPI pool record. Also swimming well in the event was first-year Delaney Dyjak (Ludlow, Mass.), who finished sixth in 24.43.

Springfield owned the 1-meter dive as the Pride swept the top three spots. Jen Thompson (Cheshire, Conn.) won the title with a score of 465.35. First-year Morgan Kitzmiller (Dover, Pa.) took second place with a score of 458.40 and Melanie Avdoulos (East Longmeadow, Mass.) rounded out the scoring with a third place score of 446.75. Both Thompson and Kitzmiller beat WPI's pool record of 457.65.

The 200 free relay team of Nicole Scotto (Southbury, Conn.), Dyjak, Pennington and Phillips finished in second place with a combined time of 1:35.65. The race was as close as possible, as the Pride finished just 0.06 seconds behind the winning team from MIT.

Saturday's events will feature the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, the men's 1-meter dive and the 200 medley relay. Preliminary events kick off at 10:00 a.m. and the finals will begin at 6:00 p.m.
