The purpose of the tournament was designed to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics. SC raised a total of $250.00.
The tournament was hosted by the Streimers, Gary and Marie, of Mystic. Daughter Sydney is a member of the Springfield College women's tennis team. "We all wish to thank the Streimers for hosting this event," said SC Head Coach Toby Coffin. "Without them, none of this would have been possible."
"We also owe special thanks to Kirsten Stickney, who helped in chaperoning the team, take photos, and aid in the trip's organization," said Coffin. "Additional thanks also goes to Tom Rolfe for hosting our team."
The honored guest at this tournament was Connecticut-native Lonnie Braxton, last year's national gold-medal-winning tennis player at the Special Olympics, which were held in Nebraska. Braxton also presented the trophies at the conclusion of the Springfield College event.
One of the tournament's winners was Bobby Schlink (Quaker Hill, Conn.), a former men's tennis player at Springfield College.
"Our women, I thought, did a great job of representing themselves and Springfield College," said Coffin. "I was proud of our team's ability to contribute to the Special Olympics program."
