Taylor Brown Named New England's Top Rookie In Men's Lacrosse
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 14, 2003 –Springfield College freshman attackman
Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, R.I.) was named the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Rookie of the Year and joined three teammates on the All-Star Team, announced today.
Brown, who was also voted the Pilgrim League East Division Player and Rookie of the Year, was named a first-team NEILA All-Star after leading the Pride in scoring (5.07 ppg), goals (3.13 gpg) and assists (1.93). His 73 total points, which was a single-season school freshman record, ranked 12th nationally in scoring average.
Junior attackman
Paul Purdy (Brewster, N.Y.) was named a second-team NEILA All-Star after finishing second on the Pride in goals (38), assists (25) and points (63). A Pilgrim League East All-Star this spring, he ranks 14th on SC’s career scoring list with 140 points.
Senior co-captains
Peter Toner (Kennebunk, Maine) and
Michael Bartol (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) were voted second-team and honorable mention NEILA All-Stars, respectively, after anchoring the Pride defense. Toner finished second on the team with 53 ground balls, while Bartol was sixth with 38.
Springfield (11-5) won its third Pilgrim League Championship and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament in the last four years. The Pride fell at three-time defending national champion Middlebury, 11-9, in the second round last Saturday (May 10). SC finished with the sixth-ranked scoring offense (14.88 gpg), while finishing fifth in scoring margin (7.06 gpg).
