Springfield, Mass. -- November 15, 2011 -- Seven players scored in double figures as the Springfield College men's basketball team defeated Castleton State, 132-113, in a wild contest this evening at SC's Blake Arena. The 132 points scored by the Pride broke the old school scoring mark of 125 set against Bates in 1968.
With the win, Springfield becomes 1-0, while Castleton State falls to 0-1,
It was a game where the statisticians were pouring over the record books. Besides the scoring record, the game also set a record for "most points combined" in an SC men's basketball contest. The new mark of 235 broke the old record of 220 which had been set twice. Those two scores included Harvard 122, SC 98 in 1972, and SC 118, Tufts 102 in 1973.
The last time a Springfield team had even scored 100 points or more came almost exactly 10 years ago on Nov. 17, 2001. And that came in overtime -- a 104-103 victory over Scranton in the consolation game of the Sponaugle Invitational at Franklin & Marshall.
This game was taken straight out of a "Grinnell-type contest" from the 1980's, where the most important statistic was "shots taken" -- with the idea that the more shots taken will ultimately produce more points made.
The score at halftime was Springfield 71, Castleton State 54. Last season, Springfield did not score 71 points in 13 of its 26 games. Castleton took 102 shots overall, making 39 of them. Of those 102 shots, 63 were 3-point attempts.
Springfield could have scored a lot more, but it was only 27-of-46 from the free throw line
Junior forward Pat Rossi (Rock Tavern, N.Y.) led Springfield College with 23 points. He was followed by a pair of newcomers -- sophomore forward Robbie Burke (Cheshire, Mass.) with 22 points, and exciting junior guard Alex Berthiaume (Springfield, Mass.) with 21 points. Berthiaume is a transfer from St. Michael's College in Winooski, Vt.
Other double-figure scorers for SC included junior forward George Adams (Queens, N.Y.) with 17 points, freshman guard Nick Sienkiewicz (Cranston, R.I.) with 17, senior guard Jordan Rote (Sheffield, Mass.) with 14, and senior forward Evan Christner (Voorheesville, N.Y.) with 12.
For the Spartans of Castleton State, six players scored in double figures. They included senior forward David Cochrane (Virginia Beach, Va.) with 17, and junior guard Mark Comstock (Rutland, Vt.) with 15. points. Up next was senior guard Greg Hughes (West Rutland, Vt.) with 14, followed by freshman guard Mak Pryzbylkowski (New Egypt, N.J.) with 13, senior forward Keith Schneider (Benson, Vt.) with 13, and sophomore guard Tyler Ackley (Scotia, N.Y.) with 10.
Springfield will next play on Friday afternoon when it travels south to play Eastern Mennonite at the Marymount Invitational in Arlington, Va. Tip off is slated for 4:00 pm.
