Springfield is currently ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Northeast Regional rankings and has defeated three teams this season that at one point where ranked in the top five in the d3Hoops.com national poll, besting MIT, WPI, and Amherst. Additionally, the Pride are among teams receiving votes in this week's national poll.
The Pride enter the weekend at the No. 3 seed as it owns an 18-7 record on the year. For Springfield, the 18 wins marks the most victories for the program since the 2004-05 team advanced to the NCAA Tournament and went 22-7.
On Saturday, Springfield will square off against second-seeded MIT at 3:00 pm in Harrington Auditorium on the WPI campus as these two teams clashed for the conference title a season ago. This season, the Pride and MIT split a pair of meetings, with the home team each winning once.
On Jan. 8, the Pride clamped down on MIT to pick up a 56-53 win, which proved to be Springfield's first win over MIT since Feb. 6, 2008. Alex Berthiaume was terrific in the victory, pouring in a game-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting to go along with four assists and four rebounds. In the rematch on Feb. 2, Berthiaume recorded a game-high 24 points, however MIT used a 16-6 run midway through the second half to topple visiting Springfield, 68-59.
In the other semifinal, top-seeded WPI will take on fifth-seeded Babson at 1:00 pm. The winner of the two semifinals will play for the league crown at 1:00 pm on Sunday.
