Men's Lacrosse Looks For Return To National Spotlight in 2003
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Springfield College men’s starts the 2003 season with its eyes set on reclaiming the Pilgrim Lacrosse League title and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament that it had won the previous two seasons. With seven of its top-ten scorers returning along with a veteran defense, the Pride will build upon a 2002 season in which it went 13-6 and won the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship.
“We have a very youthful team, but they are not young on talent,” said 20th-year head coach
Keith Bugbee, who enters the season fourth all-time among active Division III coaches with 199 wins. “This is one of the most hard-working teams I have had the pleasure of coaching.”
Junior
Paul Purdy (Brewster, Mass.) and junior
Craig Gibson (South Salem, Mass.) return to provide SC with a veteran attack. Purdy was the Pride’s top assist man while finishing second in scoring (40 goals, 23 assists, 63 points) last spring. Gibson was the team’s third-leading scorer, and finished second in goals (41-19-60).
Five sophomores return after seeing extensive playing time as freshmen.
Brian Endicott (Malden Mass.) (14-7-21),
Kevin Warnock (Somers, Conn.) (14-4-18),
Shawn Cofrin (Derry, N.H.) (11-7-18),
Derek Pedrick (Saratoga, N.Y.) (10-1-11) and
Adam Cost (West Genesee, N.Y.) (8-3-11) provide plenty of scoring punch for a team that finished 16th nationally in scoring average(13.95 goals per game) a season ago, and first (17.78) in 2001.
Senior captains
Mike Bartol (Saratoga, N.Y.) and
Peter Toner (Kennebunk, Maine) anchor an experienced SC defense, along with junior
Brian Calandruccio (Baldwin Place, N.Y.) and junior
Sean Harrington (Suffern, N.Y.).
After a freshman campaign that included 13 starts and a .518 save percentage, sophomore
P.J. Rovinelli (Framingham, Mass.) gets the starting nod in goal.
Headlining this season’s freshman class is forward
Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, R.I.), a high school All-American from Governor Dummer (Mass.) Academy, who should see extensive time on the Pride attack.
