Stevens Named NEWMAC Player of the Week
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 7, 2004 – Springfield College’s
Kim Stevens and
Leah Hettrick earned player-of-the-week honors in their respective sports from the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) on Monday.
Stevens, senior All-American back from
Knox, Maine, was named the most valuable player of the Zenaty Field Hockey Invitational after leading the Pride to a pair of wins and the team title. Stevens anchored SC's defense that allowed only one goal over two games, while helping the offense to a 4-1 win over Endicott in the semifinal and a 5-0 shutout of Western New England in the championship game.
Hettrick, a sophomore from
Meriden, Conn., was voted the MVP of the SC Women’s Volleyball Invitational after leading the 25th-ranked Pride to four-straight wins and the team title to open the ‘04 season. The NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in ’03, Hettrick totaled 49 digs (3.77 dpg) and 10 service aces (.77 apg) while making only three service reception errors on 80 attempts (.967 sr%). Her strong defense helped SC past Rhode Island College (3-0), Roger Williams (3-0), Brandeis (3-1) and Western Connecticut (3-0).
