CORTLAND, N.Y., October 1, 2006 – Senior Kara Brown and sophomore Kayla Chambers each scored goals, and sophomore Stacy Billings made three saves as the fourth-ranked (nationally) SUNY Cortland Red Dragons remained unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over the 13th-ranked Springfield College Pride.
The Red Dragons (9-0) recorded their fifth straight shutout and have not allowed a goal over the last 415 minutes, 33 seconds. Junior Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) made eight saves for the visiting Pride (7-3).
Cortland got on the scoreboard early when the Red Dragons were awarded a penalty stroke just 3:27 into the game. Brown took the stroke and beat a diving Kaplan to the right side of the cage for her first goal of the season.
SC’s best scoring opportunity came with 10:20 left in the first half. A shot by the Pride hit off a Cortland defender’s foot just before it would have gone into the cage, giving SC a penalty stroke. Freshman Julie Hoppmann (The Plains, Va.) took the stroke but was denied by Billings, who dove to her right to make the save.
Billings also made two saves late in the first half to preserve Cortland’s 1-0 lead. The Red Dragons picked up an insurance goal 2:05 into the second half. Senior Kelli Johnson sent a ball into the circle that freshman Lauren Eichenberger deflected toward goal. The ball richoted off the post, but Chambers was able to knock in the rebound for her team-high 10th goal of the season. Chambers has recorded either a goal or an assist in eight of Cortland’s nine games this fall.
In addition to scoring the game-winning goal, Brown also helped preserve the Red Dragons’ shutout with a defensive save early in the second half. A shot by SC junior Eileen Jenkins (Gorham, Maine) got past Billings, but Brown was able to knock the ball away near the goal line.
The Pride will next return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play as it travels to Northampton, Mass., to take on Smith on at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening, October 3rd.
