December 21, 2009 - Both Cody Flanigan and Jarred Burrell were named 2009 ECAC Division III Northwest Football All-Stars after having standout seasons and leading the football team to an 8-2 record this year.
Flanigan picked up the all-star nod as a defensive end, while Burrell picked up a pair of honors, being named an all-star as both a defensive back and return specialist.
Burrell, a product of Warwick, R.I., has racked up plenty of awards this postseason. He was previously picked as the top return man in New England as he was named to the New England Football Writers Division II/III All-Star team as a return specialist. He was also the return specialist selection for the d3football.com All-East Region First Team. An Empire 8 First Team selection as both a defensive back and as a return specialist, Burrell ranked third in Division III in kick returns (31.47 yards per return) and fifth in Division III in punt returns (16.18 yards per return). This season, Burrell returned a punt (at King's), a kickoff (at Utica), and an interception (a school-record 100 yards vs. Plymouth State) for touchdowns. As a defensive back, Burrell totaled 41 tackles, a team-best six pass break-ups, and three interceptions.
Flanigan, a defensive lineman from Auburn, N.Y. was previously named to the Empire 8 All-Conference Defensive First Team this year. Flanigan caused havoc on the defensive line as he totaled five sacks and a team-best 13.5 tackles for loss. He ranked fourth on the team in total tackles with 48 and added a pair of fumble recoveries. The team's co-captain will return next year for his fifth year and will serve as a tri-captain with teammates RB Joe Myhren and OT John Carlson.
The duo helped lead Springfield to an 8-2 record, including a 42-13 win over Plymouth State in the ECAC Northeast Division III Championship Bowl.
