Football Still Ranked #2 in New England Division III

Joel Altavesta Middletown, Conn. -- October 3, 2011 -- The Springfield College football team remains ranked at the #2 spot in the New England Division III College Football Coaches poll for the second straight week. The Pride upped its record to 3-1 following its 41-21 victory over Kings Point on Long Island last Saturday. Endicott stays at #1.

Endicott is now 5-0 and garnered 17 of the 20 first-place votes overall and 197 total points. Springfield weighs in right behind at #2 with two first-place votes and 163 points. In third is Trinity at 2-0 with 158 points.

In fourth is Worcester State at 5-0 with 152 points, followed by 2-0 Amherst with the lone remaining first-place vote and 126 points.

The second five includes Western New England at 4-1 with 77 points, Williams at 1-1 with 72 points, Maine Maritime at 3-1 with 71 points, Hamilton at 2-0 with 25 points, and Framingham State at 3-2 with 24 points.

Springfield will begin to meet the iron of its schedule the next three weeks when it travels to Salisbury (Oct. 8), then comes home to play Ithaca (Oct. 15, Homecoming), and St. John Fisher (Oct. 22) -- all of the Empire 8.

Head Coach Mike DeLong

Head Coach Mike DeLong Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 31st season as a head football coach in the fall of 2012. He enters his 29th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more.
