Football to Host Nationally-Ranked Hobart on Saturday

Football Springfield, Mass. – October 11, 2013 – The Springfield College football team will continue Liberty League play on Saturday when it hosts nationally-ranked Hobart for a noon kickoff.

Last week…

Last week, the Pride lost its second-straight game, falling to Union, 27-7. Time of possession was drastically in favor of Union, as the Dutchmen had the ball for 43:02 while the Springfield offense was on the field for just 16:58.

For the game, Union had 481 total yards of offense in the game, on 85 plays, compared to just 85 yards of offense for the Pride on 38 plays. Springfield, which entered the game as the top rushing team in Division III with 393 yards per game, was held to just 85 yards on 32 carries.

The Pride is now 3-2 overall and 0-2 in league-play.

A season ago…

Last year was the first meeting between the Pride and Hobart. The Statesmen used two fourth quarter touchdowns to come away with a 28-7 win over Springfield.

Pride quarterback Jonathan Marrero (Boston, Mass.) led the team with 73 rushing yards in the game. Joel Altavesta (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored a touchdown and linebacker Mike Dublin (Portsmouth, R.I.) had eight tackles despite the loss.

National Ranks…

Springfield is ranked No. 5 in the country in Division III football for rushing yards per game (331.8), falling from the top spot last week. The Pride also ranks 10th in the nation in tackles for loss.

Individually, Marrero is 12th in the country in rushing touchdowns (7) and Danny Macalena’s (Congers, N.Y.) 2.4 tackles for loss per game also ranks 12th nationally.

All-time series vs. Hobart…

Hobart leads the all-time series with Springfield, 1-0 after a 28-7 win in 2012.

About Hobart…

Hobart enters the game ranked 5th in the latest American Football Coaches Association Division III Coaches’ Poll and 7th in the D3Football.com National Poll. The Statesmen enter the contest at 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League.

Hobart has notched wins over Dickinson, Utica, Merchant Marine and WPI. In last week's 41-7 win over WPI, Hobart produced a season-high 501 yards of offense and scored 41 unanswered points.
