Gorham, Maine -- January 29, 2011 -- The Springfield College women's track & field team finished first of seven teams at an indoor track meet this afternoon at Southern Maine. Springfield scored 197 points, ahead of Southern Maine with 175, and Bates with 134. The remainder of the field was as follows -- Smith with 61, Emmanuel with 40, Mount Holyoke with 24, and Gordon with 10.
The Pride had several outstanding performances on the day to lead them to the victory. Kelly Curtis powered past the competition to win the 55-meter hurdles (8.79), and also won the long jump (16-11.25) and triple jump (35-00.25). Curtis also reached a height of 4-11.75 in the high jump to finish third.
Other individual winners on the day included Laurie Jenkins, who cruised to victory in the 55 meters in 7.48 and also took first in the 200 meters in 26.48. In the mile run, Lacey Cartier claimed first in 5:20.22.
Springfield put together an impressive showing in the 400-meter dash as it had the top three finishers. Gabriella Gaudreault won the race in 1:00.41, followed by teammates Kathryn Schumann (1:01.95) and Joy Jennifer 1:02.58.
Jenn Kapinos finished as the runner up in the 800 in 2:24.04, as did Katie Burns in the 3,000 with her time of 11:21.66.
As for the Pride's relays, its 4x200 team of Crystal Davis, Jenkins, Samantha Artz, and Gaudreault crossed the finish line first in 1:49.46. Joy, Gaudreault, Schumann, and Kapinos combined for a 4:09.17 to take second in the 4x400 relay.
In the 4x800 relay, Ali Dalton, Gabrielle Williams, Molly Parshley, and Burns turned in a time of 10:39.02, which was good enough for runner up.
In the pole vault, Rhian Duggan registered a 10-00.75 to win the event, and was just ahead of teammates Schumann (9-07.00) and Mia Saimeri ( 9-01.00).
