Men's Lacrosse Ranks No. 11 in Preseason Poll; Four Players Named Preseason All-Americans
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., - Jan. 13, 2005 – The Springfield College men’s lacrosse team was ranked No. 11 in the Face-Off Yearbook/Insidelacrosse.com Division III preseason poll, and junior attackman
Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, R.I.) was one of four Pride players to be named preseason All-America.
Brown was named a second-team preseason All-American, while graduate student midfielder
Craig Gibson (South Salem, N.Y.), senior defenseman
John Jenkins (Derry, N.H.), and sophomore goalie
Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, Mass.) were all honorable-mention selections.
Brown garnered his second-straight honorable-mention All-America award last spring after leading the Pride in goals (33), assists (41) and points (74). He finished the season ranked 17th in Division III in points per game (4.50) and 12th in assists per game (2.50), leading the Pilgrim League in both categories. The 2003 Pilgrim League Rookie and Player of the Year, he received first-team all-conference honors last spring and is 12th all-time at SC in scoring with 150 points.
Gibson, who sat out the majority of his junior year in 2003 due to injury, returns after garnering Pilgrim League First-Team All-Star recognition last season. He finished third on the team with 46 points, including a team-high 33 goals. The highest scoring midfielder in school history, Gibson ranks 14th all-time at SC with 146 points, and 13th with 99 goals.
Jenkins is a leading member of a defensive unit that held its 2004 opponents to only 8.25 goals per game as SC finished seventh in the country in scoring margin (6.29 gpg.)
Cloutier established himself as one of the top young goalies in the country last year, leading the Pilgrim League in winning percentage (.857), while finishing fourth in goals against average (8.51).
Last season, SC finished with a 13-4 record and ranked No. 9 in the final Division III poll of the year. The Pride defeated Western New England College, 12-11, in the Pilgrim League Championship game to earn its fourth title and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in the last five seasons. Making the program’s 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, SC fell at Stevens Institute of Technology, 8-4, in a second-round game.
The Pride opens the 2005 campaign at home versus 2004 Division III national runner-up Nazareth (N.Y.) College on Saturday, March 5th at 1:00 p.m. on Benedum Field.
