Grantham, Pa. - December 4, 2010 - Both John Archambeau and Joe Grippi won individual titles to lead the Springfield College wrestling team to a fourth-place finish out of 13 teams at the Petrofes Invitational hosted by Messiah College.
Springfield, which entered the weekend ranked 25th in the nation, totaled 127 points on the weekend. Wilkes won the Invitational with 162.5 points, followed by Mount Union (147), and host Messiah (136.5).
Grippi and Archambeau mirrored their success they had a year ago, as they each won individual titles for the second-straight year. Grippi, the top seed, took home the title at 141 pounds, after winning at 133 last year. Archambeau, who was ranked second, took the title at 165 pounds, a year removed from winning at 157.
Springfield had a second and third-place finisher at 174 as Michael Fish took runner-up honors and Brandon Sundwall finished in third. The Pride's other runner-up came at 285 as Ron Fusco lost in the championship bout.
Behind Archambeau's title at 165, Springfield had two other top-eight finishers in the weight class as Derrick Longo defeated teammate James Coutoumas in the seventh-place match.
Dru Thomas placed six at 125 pounds, as did Eddie Giron at 133. Blaze Chatham took in fifth at 133, while at the 149-pound weight class, Ryan McGilvray placed fourth, while teammate Steve Flathers finished in seventh. Michael Case also had a solid weekend as he placed eighth at 197.
The Pride will next take the mat when they host WPI on Wednesday, December 8th. Action kicks off at 7:00 pm.
