Veazie Named NEWMAC Player Of The Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 12, 2005- Springfield College junior midfielder Michelle Bongiovanni (West Springfield, Mass.) and sophomore forward Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Maine) have each been named this week’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Players of the Week in their respective fall sports; Bongiovanni for women’s soccer, and Veazie for field hockey.

Bongiovanni, a graduate of West Springfield High School, has led the Pride to a 2-0-1 record in the beginning stages of its 2005 campaign. This past week, Bongiovanni scored SC’s lone goal in its 1-1 tie with non-conference rival, Western New England College (WNEC), on Tuesday evening (Sept. 6). Two days later, on Thursday night (Sept. 8), the junior midfielder netted the game-winning score as the Pride downed Westfield State. Bongiovanni has scored three goals in as many games this season, leading SC with six points.

Veazie, a graduate of Dexter High School, had a tremendous week for the 3-1 Springfield College field hockey team. In SC’s 4-3, double overtime road victory at Keene State last Wednesday night (Sept. 7), Veazie contributed in all of the Pride’s four scores with two goals and two assists. The sophomore forward netted the game-winning goal in the 96th minute of play, lifting the Pride to its third victory of the season. Veazie has scored four goals on the season in just four games to go along with two assists for a team-high 10 points.

Among the NEWMAC leaders, Bongiovanni is currently tied for second in goals scored (three) and third in goals per game (1.00). Through the second week of the season, Veazie is tied for second in the conference in assists (two), and third in goals (four) and points (10).

This week, SC’s women’s soccer team will be challenged with three consecutive road contests. To start, the Pride will travel to MCLA on Tuesday, September 13, for a 4:00 p.m. match. Springfield’s field hockey squad will next be at Connecticut College on Thursday, September 15, in a 4:00 p.m. game.
