Suzie Snyder Wins World Off-Road Triathlon Championship

WAILEA, Hawaii, October 24, 2004 - Springfield College graduate student Suzi Snyder (Averill Park, N.Y.) was named a World Champion at the Nissan Xterra World Off-Road Triathlon Championships on Sunday, October 24 after finishing first in the female, 20-24 age group in a field of over 400 competitors from around the world.

The field, which included 70 pros who represented the best off-road multisport athletes from more than 20 countries, competed for one of the richest pro purses in multisport at $130,000. Snyder finished 30th out of 115 women in the field, and ended up 205th out of 468 total competitors. She quaified for the world championships after winning her age group at the United States National Championship in Lake Tahoe last month.

Snyder was a four-year member of the women's track and field team and has run cross country for the past two seasons. She graduated in May with a degree in physical education and is currently pursuing a master's in strength and conditioning. Snyder set a school record during the 2002 outdoor track and field season in the pole vault with a leap of 10 feet, 4 inches.

The Nissan Xterra World Championship (which was only Snyder's sixth-career off-road triathlon race) was the final stop on the XTERRA Global Tour - a national and international series of 78 qualifying events held in Saipan, New Zealand, Austria, Italy, The Netherlands, Japan, South Africa, Germany, Canada, the Czech Republic, and the United States during the past year.

The course, considered Xterra's toughest and most demanding, consisted of a 1.5-kilometer rough water swim at Wailea Beach, a 30-kilometer mountain bike on the lower slopes of Haleakala, and an 11-kilometer trail run through the rugged Maui outback.

The event will air during a one-hour "CBS Sports Spectacular" on Superbowl Sunday, February 6, 2005 at 1:00 p.m.
