Field Hockey Vies For NCAA Bid

After two-straight NCAA Division III semifinal appearances, including a trip to the 2000 national championship match, Springfield finished second in both the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletics Conference (NEWMAC) regular season and tournament last fall. The Pride bounced back to win the ECAC Division III New England Tournament, and looks carry that success over to 2002 with a return trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Despite the departure of First-Team All-American and 2001 NEWMAC Player of the Year Melissa Rogers, Springfield returns a host of talented players. Senior captain Liz Omura returns for her fourth year of varsity competition. Starting every game last fall, she finished fifth on the Pride with 11 points (5 goals, 1 assist). Sophomore Lydia Grant had an immediate impact on the squad in her first season in 2001, finishing second for the Pride with 22 points (10 goals, 2 assists). Classmate Lindsay Pardue is favored to take over the starting goaltending duties this fall after totaling a 1.12 GAA and a .836 save percentage as a backup last season. Senior captain Kelly Castine brings veteran leadership to the young Pride that graduated five starters last season.
