MIDDLEBURY, Vt., September 17, 2006 - Springfield College sophomore Michael LaJoie (Enfield, Conn.) combined a first-round 78 and second-round 79 for a two-day total of 157 to lead the Pride to a 15th-place team finish out of 24 competing squads at this weekend's 23rd Annual Duke Nelson Invitational Golf Tournament, hosted by Middlebury College.
Skidmore College captured the team title with 591 total team points, as New York University (NYU) finished second at 593, Salem State College placed third (597), host Middlebury College finished in fourth (605), and Saint Anselm College rounded out the top five with 607 total team points. SC finished with a team total of 635 points to place 15th in its 2006 season-opener.
Senior Andrew Wright (Hampden, Mass.) shot the Pride's low round on day one at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course, carding a 76 on the par-71 course. Wright would finish with a two-day total of 160, however, coming in with an 84 on Sunday's round. Senior Matt McCarthy (Springfield, Mass.) finished third for the Pride in the tournament, shooting an opening-round 86 before rebounding to shoot a team-low 75 during round two. McCarthy finished with a two-day total of 161.
Senior Bryan Chiravolo (Trumbull, Conn.) came in fourth for SC on the weekend, shooting rounds of 83 and 81 for a 164-stroke total. Sophomore Greg Levings (Averill Park, N.Y.) placed fifth on the squad with a 79 and 91 for a two-round total of 170.
The Pride will next travel to compete in the two-day Williams College Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, September 23rd and 24th, in Williamstown, Mass.
