Women's Lacrosse Wins Fifth-Straight With 12-5 Win At MIT In NEWMAC Opener

Cambridge, Mass. - March 28, 2009 - Five unanswered goals in the first half helped propel Springfield College to a 12-5 win over MIT in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women’s lacrosse opener for both squads. Edith Reshef and Erica Little each posted two goals for the Engineers (3-3, 0-1 NEWMAC) as Jackie Moscardelli tallied three goals and an assist for the Pride (6-2, 1-0 NEWMAC).

Springfield recorded three consecutive goals during the first five minutes of the contest. Alexandra Bazzano lit the lamp twice as Kaeleigh Lannan rounded out the spurt. An unassisted strike by Reshef narrowed the gap to 3-1 at the 23:32 mark. A free position shot by Moscardelli 32 seconds later ignited the pivotal run that resulted in an 8-1 advantage at halftime. Moscardelli added back-to-back blasts down the stretch while Nicole Soucie and Heather Dobson contributed to the rally.

The Pride carried the momentum into the second stanza as Erin Doolan connected on a feed from Moscardelli with 22:39 on the clock. The game became a defensive battle until Lannan increased the visitors’ margin to nine (10-1) over 10 minutes later. MIT then ended its scoring drought with strikes from Little and Samantha O’Keefe that were 45 seconds apart. Each side traded goals to close out the game with Little providing the final marker.

O’Keefe paced the Engineers with five groundballs and two caused turnovers as Stephanie Leger contributed three groundballs. Alex Wright notched three draw controls while Lauren Rodda posted two caused turnovers. In net, Molly McCartin collected 10 saves.

Lannan totaled two goals, an assist, and two caused turnovers as Bazzano and Soucie each recorded two goals. Soucie added a team-high three draw controls while Meghan Wisell registered three groundballs. Nicole Flores bolstered the defense with three groundballs and two caused turnovers as Lauren McAulay made 15 saves.

MIT will host Gordon College on Thursday, April 2 while Springfield continues conference play at home on Saturday, April 4 against Wheaton College.
