Football's Marrero, Poggio Earn Weekly Honors

Jonathan Marrero and James Poggio Springfield, Mass. -- October 15, 2012 -- Jonathan Marrero and James Poggio have earned Liberty League conference honors for their play on the football field this past Saturday following Springfield College's 66-13 win over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Marrero was named the Liberty League's Offensive Performer of the Week, while Poggio took home both the Liberty League and ECAC Division III Northwest Special Teams Player of the Week. .

In addition, SC's Max Nacewicz was named an honorable mention Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week.

Marrero, a freshman quarterback from Boston, Mass., had a spectacular Saturday. He was involved in seven touchdowns, all seven coming before the first half whistle sounded.

Marrero ran for 144 yards on 15 carries, averaging 9.6 yards per carry, including touchdown runs of 27, 24, and 24 yards. In the air, he completed 6-of-8 passes for 163 yards and no interceptions. He had four TD passes of 14, 43, 57, and 36 yards. Overall, he produced 307 yards of total offense, 300 of which came in the first half. He played about seven minutes of the third quarter.

Moreover, Marrero tied the Springfield College single-game record for most TD passes. He is the fourth SC quarterback to claim that record, the last to do so being Kevin Cahill versus UMass Dartmouth in 2000. It also tied the SC team record for most TD passes in a single game. Besides the UMass Dartmouth game in 2000, the other SC contests where that record was tied came in 1954 versus Colby, 1969 versus Colby, and 1978 versus Albany.

Poggio, a junior from East Granby, Conn., also had a very productive day. He was honored as the LL Special Teams Player of the Week, primarily for his punting ability. Poggio punted four times, averaging 44.5 yards per punt, including a long of 58. He also had one punt within the 20-yard line.

In addition, Poggio also caught one two-point conversion from Marrero. Beyond that, he caught three more passes for 80 yards, including two for touchdowns of 14 and 57 yards.

Poggio is now averaging 38.54 yards per punt, and is 45th in the nation in that category in Division III.

One more member of the Pride received Liberty League recognition. He is sophomore defensive end Max Nacewicz of Newtown, Conn.. Nacewicz received honorable mention recognition for his defensive play. He was credited with five tackles, including 2.5 tackles-for-loss (for 10 yards) and one sack (for eight yards). He also had a forced fumble and a pass break-up.

Nacewicz is now ranked fourth in the nation in sacks with 1.43 per game. He is now ranked tied for 12th in the nation in tackles-for-loss with 2.00 per game.

Next Saturday (Oct. 20), SC will travel to Canton, N.Y. for a Liberty League test versus St. Lawrence.
