WORCESTER, MASS. - April 3, 2008 - The Clark University baseball team scored two runs in the sixth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and hold off Springfield College for a 4-2 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory on Thursday at Granger Field. Clark earns its first conference victory to move to 1-2 in the league and 7-12 overall. Springfield, which has lost two of its last five games, drops to 6-12 (2-3 NEWMAC).
Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Clark pushed across the eventual game-winning runs. Freshman Scott Hollingsworth (Tilton, N.H.) doubled down the left line to lead off for Clark, moved to third on Joe Silva’s (Westbury, N.Y.) sacrifice hit, and came home on an RBI single from Ron Bathrick (Northaven, Conn.) to give Clark a one-run lead (3-2). After Phillip DiMarco (Bellingham, Mass.), who pinch ran for Bathrick, was picked off at first for the second out, junior Matt Tillo (Osterville, Mass.) hit a double to left to keep Clark alive. The Cougars used an RBI single from Stephen DeMartino (East Haven, Conn.) to plate Tillo for the final run of the game.
Springfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead on junior Jamie Mackie’s (Springfield, Mass.) two-run shot to left field in the first inning. It was his first homerun of the season.
An RBI groundout by Silva to plate Hollingsworth, who reached on a triple, put Clark on the board in the home half of the inning. Rookie Benjamin Seel (Belgrade, Mass.) drove in a run to knot the score (2-2) in the fifth inning. That set the stage for Clark’s two-run sixth.
Hollingsworth went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead Clark. Tillo collected two hits in the win.
Sophomore Jonathan Merritt (East Bridgewater, Mass.) worked eight complete innings allowing nine hits, two runs while fanning three to pick up his second win of the season. Junior David Gagnon (Harwich, Mass.), who pitched the final inning, earned the save.
Sophomore Joe Kropa (Cranford, N.J.), senior Casey Federico (Agawam, Mass.) and senior Rex Cone (Bristol, Conn.) all had two hits for Springfield.
Junior Travis Turgeon (Norwich, Conn.) was charged with the loss after giving up four runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings on the mound.
Clark will travel to Coast Guard Academy for a conference doubleheader on Saturday (Noon), while Springfield will host Brandeis that same day at 1 p.m.
