Westfield, Mass. – December 6, 2008 - Junior swingman Ryan Blackmon scored a game-high 26 points to lead Springfield College to a 68-61 victory over Western New England College in second day action of the Eighth Annual Pioneer Valley Men’s Hoop Classic.
Springfield improves to 5-2 while WNEC drops to 1-6.
Blackmon scored 10 first-half points to stake the Pride to a 30-18 halftime lead. Springfield led by as many as 15 points, 25-10, in the first half.
Springfield’s biggest lead was 18 points, 38-20, early in the second half, then WNEC began mounting a comeback attempt. The Golden Bears went on a 12-2 run to trail by eight, 40-32, at the 15:27 mark.
The teams played on near-even terms for most of the second half, with WNEC closing to within five points, 58-53, on a dunk by Brad Thomka with 2:41 remaining. Blackmon then made a layup a minute later for a 60-53 Springfield advantage.
Also scoring in double figures for the Pride were Pat Crean (13) and Danny White (11). Blackmon, who was named to the all-tournament team, was 4 for 5 from 3-point range and 6 for 7 from the foul line.
Matt Maynard scored a team-high 16 for WNEC. Michael Kennedy and Kyle Fredette scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, and tied for game-high honors with eight rebounds apiece.
