Basketball To Participate in Play 4Kay on February 4

Play 4Kay Springfield, Mass. - January 30, 2012 - The Springfield College basketball programs will be doing their part to raise breast cancer awareness as it hosts a Play 4Kay Day on February 4th as part of it's conference doubleheader.

The mission of the initiative, which was previously referred to as the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Pink Zone, remains to raise breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund will continue to be the official charity of the initiative.

The women's basketball team will take on WPI at 12:00 pm, followed by the men's basketball team's contest versus MIT at 2:00 pm. Both games are critical in the race for the postseason and seedings in the upcoming New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament.

Coach Yow's third recurrence of breast cancer in 2006 was the catalyst to the WBCA Pink Zone. Before her passing on January 24, 2009, Coach Yow, along with her teammates the WBCA and The V Foundation, achieved the feat of uniting thousands in the fight against women's cancers and since then the movement continues to grow and change lives each and every year during the month of February.

Springfield College plans to raise breast cancer awareness in the following ways – pink ribbons will be distributed to fans in attendance; the Springfield College basketball teams will be wearing pink T-shirts during warm-ups; the game program will be pink; the live stats which are available by clicking here will be featured mainly in pink; and Blake Arena will be decorated with pink balloons, streamers, and signs. Springfield College is requesting fans wear pink apparel to this contest, and the first 40 students that arrive at the game wearing pink will win a free order of cheesy bread from Domino's on Boston Road.
