Wheaton College Outlasts Baseball In NEWMAC Finals, 9-6
NORTON, Mass., May 2, 2005- The Springfield College baseball team battled all the way back from a four-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth, but fell in the 11th inning to No. 24 Wheaton College, 9-6, in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament championship round at Sidell Stadium.
SC smashed five hits and capitalized on a throwing error during the ninth inning. Senior catcher
Anthony Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) and juniors
Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and
Adam Tarquini (Fishkill, N.Y.) all drove in a run during the comeback.
Senior left fielder
Mike Judge (Chatham, N.J.) went 2-for-5 on the day with a run scored, while senior designated hitter
Matt Basteri (Melrose, Mass.) capped a 1-for-5 showing and registered an RBI.
Sophomore right-hander
Derek Hodder (Naugatuck, Conn.) went 6.2 innings of work allowing three runs and six hits with one strikeout and three walks.
Wheaton College was led by junior designated hitter Mark Baumer who went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and recorded three RBI, while freshman third baseman Scott Guillerault also went 3-for-5 posting two RBI.
