Springfield, Mass. -- November 5, 2012 -- Jonathan Marrero, the quarterback for the Springfield College football team, has been named this week's Liberty League Rookie of the Week in his sport. Fullback Joel Altavesta also received LL honorable mention honors.Marrero and Altavesta were two of the main cogs in SC's 42-21 victory over RPI last Saturday afternoon at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field.
A freshman from Boston, Mass., Marrero earlier in the year was named a Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week. This is his first LL Rooklie of the Week recognition. A sport management major, Marrero ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns of 14 and 7 yards. He also completed five passes in seven attempts for 96 more yards, including two touchdowns of 15 and 10 yards.
Due mainly to Marrero, Springfield currently ranks first in the nation in passing efficiency with a rating of 194.37. SC also currently ranks second in the nation in rushing offense with 320.67 yards per game on the ground.
Altavesta, a senior from Tewksbury, Mass., is one of the main reasons for that last statistic. The fullback ran for 170 yards and one touchdown (of 1 yard) on the ground versus RPI. A criminal justice major, Altavesta was named a Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week earlier this season.
