



Complete ResultsNorthampton, Mass. - September 12, 2009 - David Birdsall won the 5k race at the Smith Invitational on Saturday afternoon to pace the Springfield College men's cross country team to a second-place finish. Out of the nine teams competing, Springfield finished second with 33 points, just two points behind eventual winner, the Coast Guard Academy.
All five of the runners that scored for Springfield in the race placed in the top 15. Birdsall won the race after he crossed the finish line in 16:57.89, nearly seven seconds faster than the next competitor. Troy French finished third in the race in 17:06.99, while Anthony Salvucci finished fifth in 17:17.46.
Finishing in 10th was Michael DeCrescenzo in 17:28.52 and teammate Chris Malia took 14th place in 17:55.48. Rounding out some of the other top performances on the day icluded Ryan Allison (17:59.21) and Matt Geanacopoulos (18:10.22).
Bryan Brown will enter his third season as the head men's cross country coach in the fall of 2013. Brown, who was a former All-American at Springfield College in track, is the reigning NEWMAC Coach of the Year after leading Springfield to its second-straight second-place finish at the conference championships a year ago .
