Middlebury College Downs Women's Swimming and Diving, 164-136

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., December 9, 2006 – Springfield College senior tri-captain Paul McCloskey (Brookfield, Conn.) captured the 1,000 free (10:07.22), the 200 free (1:46.97) and the 500 free (4:51.75), but it was the Panthers of Middlebury College which edged the Pride, 151-149, in a non-conference meet this afternoon at the Art Linkletter Natatorium.

Despite the loss which drops SC to 2-3 overall on the season, sophomore Greg Pearsall (Litchfield, Conn.) had a solid day with wins in the 50 free (21.97) and the 100 free (48.55). Pearsall also anchored the final leg on two of the Pride’s winning relay teams, in the 200 medley relay (1:37.80) and the 200 free relay (1:26.58).

Middlebury (2-0) was led by senior tri-captain Rob Collier (Catonsville, Md.) with wins in the 100 butterfly (52.81), the 50 butterfly (24.01), and the 100 individual medley (55.11).

On the women’s side, sophomore Erin White (Glastonbury, Conn.) qualified for nationals in just her first competition of the season by winning the one-meter dive with a score of 257.50. It wasn’t enough, however, as the Panthers improved to 1-1 with the 164-136 victory over SC (3-4).

On the three-meter board, junior Melissa Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) won with a 222.15 point total. Others who picked up victories for the Pride on the women’s side included sophomore Moira Price (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) in the 50 breaststroke (32.57), senior Meaghan O’Hara (Bedford, N.H.) in the 100 free (55.97), and freshman Megan Cooney (Hemmelstown, Pa.) in the 100 individual medley (1:05.17).

The Middlebury women were paced by junior Marika Ross (Shorewood, Wisc.) with victories in the 200 free (1:58.84) and the 500 free (5:11.39), and senior tri-captain Rebecca Reingold (Oakland, Calif.) with wins in the 50 backstroke (29.01) and the 50 butterfly (27.95).

SC will next be at Hartwick College with Union College on Saturday, January 6th, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
