SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – April 7, 2007 – The Springfield College men’s and women’s track and field teams both won their respective track meets today at SC’s Blake Field. The men finished first of four, while the women finished first of five.

Team scores on the men’s side were Springfield 243, Williams 154, Westfield State 105, and Middlebury 49. On the women’s side, it was Springfield 173, Williams 160, Middlebury 143, Smith 77, and Westfield State 20.

Springfield’s head coaches, Ken Klatka and Jim Pennington, were both pleased with the results and mentioned several of their performers to highlight.

On the men’s side, freshman Steve Headley (Wilbraham, Mass.) won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.80, which was just five one-hundredths of a second off qualifying for the NCAA Division III nationals. Headley also finished second in the 200 with a time of 22.07. “Those were two outstanding times,” said Klatka, “especially considering how cold it was and how early in the season we still are.”

Also of note was SC’s 1-2 finish in the 800. Sophomore Mike Griffin (Scarborough, Me.) and sophomore Eric Nacsin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) had times of 1:57.58 and 1:58.57, respectively.

In the hammer, junior Dominic Uguccioni (Colrain, Mass.) finished first in the hammer with a toss of 167-1, a personal best by 10 feet, and a 30-foot improvement at this same time last year. He missed nationals by about one foot.

In addition, junior Mike Miller (Storrs, Conn.) scored a lot of points today (33) by placing first in the high jump (1.88 meters), first in the pole vault (3.96 meters), third in the long jump (6.07 meters), third in the high hurdles (17.37), sixth in the javelin (45.18 meters), and seventh in the shot put (12.48 meters).

Other notables for SC on the men’s side included senior Alex Kampersal (Natick, Mass.), who finished first in the shot put (16.74 meters) and second in the discus (45.08 meters); senior Tony Larkin ((Walpole, Mass.), who finished first in the high hurdles (16.69) and first in the 400 hurdles (57.63); and senior Dave Forrette (Chicopee, Mass.), who finished first in the 400 (50.57).

On the women’s side, freshman Nicole Reynolds (Riverside, R.I.) created quite a stir with her fine performances. She won the 400 (60.88), was third in the 200 (26.82), and helped both relays – the 4x100 (51.14) and the 4x400 (4:22.15) -- to second place finishes.

Sophomore Kayla Robertson (Peace Dale, R.I.) won the high jump with a leap of 1.52 meters, finished third in the triple jump (10.21 meters), and finished fifth in the javelin (27.81 meters). Sophomore Lara Dalidowitz (Southington, Conn.) finished second with the same height in the high jump.

Sophomore Kelsey Bishop (Warwick, R.I.) won the hammer throw (49.37 meters, 161-11) and finished fourth in the shot put (9.97 meters). Her throw in the hammer was good enough to provisionally qualify for the nationals. Freshman Nikki Hay (Norwalk, Conn.) won the triple jump (11.04 meters), and finished second in the 200 (26.41). Junior Alyssa Brigham (Penacook, N.H.) won the 1500 meter run (4:53.06). Sophomore Katie Parente (Torrington, Conn.) had a good time of 61.56 in the 400, where she finished third, as well as a good time in the 200 (26.83), where she finished fourth.

And finally, freshman Amanda DiPaulo (Garrison, N.Y.), in her first collegiate 5000, won that event with a time of 19:17.70. DiPaulo made a name for herself earlier this year as a point-guard on the women’s basketball team.

Next Saturday (Apr. 14), the track and field teams are at Coast Guard with WPI.
