SC Captures Four NEWMAC Year-End Swimming and Diving Awards

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – March 1, 2007 – Following the conference championships of the past two weeks, Springfield College has earned four year-end awards as a result of strong years by their men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.

Among those honored was sophomore Moira Price (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) who was named New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Women’s Swimmer of the Year. Price set a conference record in the 200-yard breaststroke during February’s championships with the weekend’s only NCAA "A" cut time of 2:20.95. She was a major factor in helping the Pride win its seventh consecutive NEWMAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship as a team.

Head Diving Coach Peter Avdoulos, already regarded as one of the top diving coaches in the country, adds another award to his resume as he has been named NEWMAC Women’s Diving Coach of the Year for the fourth time. He also received the same award in 2000, 2003, and 2004. In addition, Peter has been named the NEWMAC Men’s Diving Coach of the Year four times (2003-2006, inclusive). Avdoulos has been named the NCAA Division III Coach of the Year a remarkable five times in the last decade; four with the women’s team (1996, 1999, 2001, and 2002) and once with the men (2005).

Head Swimming Coach John Taffe was named the NEWMAC Women’s Coach of the Year. It was the fifth time he has been honored by the conference in that way during his 18-year tenure at Springfield College. He had previously earned this award from 2001 through 2005, inclusively. Taffe had also been named the NEWMAC Men’s Coach of the Year following the team’s first ever conference championship in 2005.

Springfield College received its fourth NEWMAC post-season swimming and diving honor of the year as its men’s program was rewarded with the first-ever NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award. In the NEWMAC Men’s Championship, the Pride finished third as a team, with a solid performance by junior Roy Burch (Warwick, Bermuda), who finished in the top three in four separate events.
