Football To Begin Liberty League Play at Rochester on Saturday

Jonathan Marrero Springfield, Mass. – September 26, 2013 – The Springfield College football team, fresh off a 41-0 win at Mount Ida, will look to remain unbeaten as it opens Liberty League play on Saturday at the University of Rochester for a noon kickoff.

Last week…
Springfield is coming off its third-straight win after handling Mount Ida on the road, 41-0. It was also the second-straight week that the Pride posted a shutout, and marked the first time Springfield held consecutive opponents scoreless since 1957. Since surrendering 40 points in the season-opener, Springfield has now outscored its opponents, 77-0.

Pride quarterback Jonathan Marrero (Boston, Mass.) accounted for four touchdowns in the win over Mount Ida and was named both the Liberty League and ECAC Division III Northwest Offensive Player of the Week. Brodie Quinn (Pittsfield, Mass.) posted 48 yards on nine carries, including a four yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Defensively, Danny Macalena (Congers, N.Y.) led the Pride with two sacks and 10 tackles, with four and a half of them for a loss of 33 yards. Macalena also forced a fumble, while senior Corey Kaiser (River Vale, N.J.) had 11 tackles. As a whole, the Springfield College defense collected seven sacks, forced three fumbles, and got a defensive score in the 41-point victory.

A season ago…
Last year, the Pride cruised to a 44-14 win over Rochester led by fullback Joel Altavesta (Tewksbury, Mass.). The returning senior ran for 214 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. Marrero made his Springfield College debut at quarterback in the game last season, entering in the third quarter. He wasted little time putting his stamp on the offense and led the Pride to a touchdown in just three plays.

National Ranks...
As a team, the Pride's 390.3 rushing yards per game ranks second in the country, is 21st in scoring offense (42 ppg), and 34th in first down offense (68). Individually, Marrero sits eighth in the nation in rushing yards (421) and 18th in rushing yards per game (140.3). On the defensive side of the ball, Macalena is 10th in tackles for loss per game (2.8) and 20th in forced fumbles per game (.67).

All-time series vs. Rochester…
Saturday’s match up will be just the third time that Springfield has taken on Rochester. The Pride hold a 1-0-1 record all-time against the Yellowjackets, including a 44-14 win last year and a 7-7 tie that occurred back in 1929.

About Rochester…
Rochester is coming off a loss to unbeaten Gallaudet University last week. The Yellowjackets fell 37-13 as Gallaudet turned a fumble return and a blocked punt into 14 second quarter points. Rochester is 1-1 on the season, winning its season-opener, 28-27 over Thiel College. Saturday’s game again Springfield is the home-opener for the Yellowjackets.
