Women's Swimming and Diving Sinks Coast Guard, 158.5-127.5

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., January 28, 2006 – Springfield College senior captain Emily Phillips (North Windham, Conn.) was victorious in two individual events and one relay, leading the SC women to a 158.5-127.5 victory this afternoon at the Art Linkletter Natatorium.

On the men’s side, SC sophomore All-American Roy Burch (Warwick, Bermuda) placed first in three individual events and one relay, but the Pride fell to Coast Guard this afternoon, 154-146.

Phillips won the 100 back (1:02.21), 100 free (54.63), and teamed with junior Julianne McCormick (East Walpole, Mass) and freshman Moira Price (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and Kristen Schadow (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) to win the 200 medley relay. Schadow also took first in the 200 butterfly (2:14.9), while Price placed first in the 200 breast (2:33.55).

Other first place finishes for the Pride included seniors Sarah Strout (Boothbay, Maine) in the 500 free (5:18.14) and Alicia Hart (West Hartford, Conn.) in the 100 butterfly (1:02.86), juniors Brittany Hargis (East Lyme, Conn.) in the 1000 free (11:07.61) and Meaghan O’Hara (Bedford, N.H.) in the 200 back (2:13.84) and sophomore Emily Sheahan (Erin, N.Y.) in the 200 free (1:59.45)

In the diving competition, freshman Erin White (Glastonbury, Conn.) was victorious on the one-meter board with a score of 258.00. Senior Sarah Healy (Milton, Mass.) finished second in the same event with a total of 249.66 points.

Coast Guard received first place finishes from Kristyna Vihonski in the 100 breast (1:13.26), Joan Hunter in the 50 free (25.70), and Ali Shafovaloff on the three-meter board with a score of 126.60.

On the men’s side, Burch was triumphant in the 100 back (54.94), 50 free (21.39), 100 free (47.79), and teamed with juniors Paul McCloskey (Brookfield Conn.), Chris LeCompte (Londonderry, N.H.) and freshman Will Banulski (Bristol, Conn.) to win the 400 free relay with a time of (3:10.91).

Senior All-American Mike Shaw (Westfield, Mass.) continued his unbeaten streak in both the one- and three-meter diving competitions by posting scores of 342.68 and 316.43, respectively.

Other individual first place finishes for SC included senior All-American Dan Moran (Wilbraham, Mass.) in the 200 butterfly (1:57.23) and sophomore Justin Zook (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) in the 200 back (2:02.65).

For the Bears, sophomore Bobby Brown won the 1000 free (9:46.72), 500 free (4:47.72), and the 200 free (1:45.21).

Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will travel to Amherst College next Saturday, February 4th at 1pm.
