Football Hits The Road For League Battle With RPI

Springfield College Football Springfield, Mass. - November 7, 2013 - The Springfield College football team, coming off its bye week, will look for its second-straight win when it continues Liberty League play on the road for a noon kickoff at RPI on Saturday.

Two weeks ago…
On October 26, the Pride broke snapped its three-game slide by defeating St. Lawrence 21-20 on Homecoming weekend. St. Lawrence owned 20-7 lead midway through the third quarter, but Springfield battled back, scoring two touchdowns on its next three drives and topping the game off with an interception by Umberto DiMeo (Hamilton, N.J.) with less than a minute to go.

It was the first collegiate start at quarterback for Pride sophomore Tim O’Brien (E. Bridgewater, Mass.). He finished with 65 yards on the ground to go along with a score, while throwing for 82 yards on 4-of-7 passing. O’Brien marched Springfield down the field in the fourth quarter for a 13-play drive that would lead to the eventual go-ahead touchdown.

For the game, St. Lawrence had 309 total yards of offense in the game, on 65 plays, with the Pride not far behind totaling 255 yards of offense on 60 plays. The Pride is now 4-3 overall and 1-3 in league-play.

A season ago…
Last year was the seventh meeting between the Pride and RPI, and it was Springfield who earned a 42-21 victory over the Engineers. The Pride opened the game by scoring 28 unanswered points, 21 of which came in the second half.

Pride quarterback Jonathan Marrero (Boston, Mass.) led the team with two touchdowns in the game on 131 rushing yards. Joel Altavesta (Tewksbury, Mass.) also scored a touchdown on 170 rushing yards while Sam Weiss (Glasser, N.J.) had eight tackles and an interception.

National Ranks…
Springfield is still ranked No. 8 in the country in D-III football for rushing yards per game (297.1). The Pride also rank 21st in the nation in tackles for loss, averaging 8.6 per game.

All-time series vs. RPI…
Springfield leads the all-time series with RPI, 5-2 after a 42-21 victory last season.

About RPI…
RPI currently holds a 4-4 record on the year. The Engineers were able to pick up a key, 28-13 victory against Merchant Marine last Saturday to break out of a four-game losing skid.

The Engineers have recorded wins over Norwich University, Alfred University, Castleton State College, and Merchant Marine. In last week’s win over Merchant Marine, RPI compiled a season-high 284 yards of rushing and scored 21 points in the second quarter on three rushing touchdowns to break the game open.
