Springfield, Mass. -- January 20, 2010 -- The Williams College wrestling team, ranked #18 in the nation and #1 in New England, edged #28 Springfield College, 19-17, in a good match this evening at SC's Dana Gymnasium.Williams built leads of 13-3, 16-10, and 19-14 -- and managed to hold on. The match began at the 197-pound weight classification. And that bout turned out to be one of the more important matches of the night and the only pin of the night as junior Ryan Malo (Georgetown, Mass.) earned the fall just 1:09 into the match. That gave Williams a quick 6-0 lead, an advantage from which the Pride could never fully recover.
For Springfield, junior Steve Flathers (Stratford, Conn.) at 149, and sophomore Ronald Thompson (Stamford, Conn.) at 165 produced major decisions in favor of the Pride.
Each team won five bouts apiece.
