



Complete ResultsNorthampton, Mass. - September 13, 2008 - The Springfield men's cross country team placed third this afternoon at the Smith Invitational in its opening race of the 2008 campaign.
Coast Guard won the race as it tallied 15 points followed by Westfield State (55), Springfield (116), Western New England (139), Norwich (141), Clark (175), Castleton State (189), New England (216), Mitchell (250), Lasell (254), MCLA (304), Southern Vermont (325) and Elms (402).
Freshman David Birdsall was the first member of the Pride to cross the finish line in a time of 17:37.06, as he finished 11th overall in a field of 145. John DeVaney was the next member of the squad to finish as he finished in 29th place with a time of 18:18.93.
Christopher Malia finished in 34th (18:29.78) and teammate Matt Geanacopoulos followed him in a time of 18:32.67 in 36th place. Rounding out the Pride's top five runners was Jacob Brewer, who finished in 45th win a time of 18:47.38.
The Pride next run at UMass Dartmouth next Saturday morning.

Bryan Brown will enter his third season as the head men's cross country coach in the fall of 2013. Brown, who was a former All-American at Springfield College in track, is the reigning NEWMAC Coach of the Year after leading Springfield to its second-straight second-place finish at the conference championships a year ago .
