Women's Cross Country Takes Ninth as Young Wins ECAC Championships

WATERFORD, Conn., November 5, 2005 -- Springfield College senior
Meghan Young (Hurley, N.Y) set a course record as she claimed the individual women’s title, and the Pride took ninth as a team, at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Cross Country Championships today at Harkness State Park in Waterford, Conn. hosted by Connecticut College.
Young set a course and personal best, 21:46, for the six-kilometer course in near perfect racing conditions to outdistance her nearest competitor by 38 seconds; Young earned All-ECAC recognition with the win. Young was followed
Lara Dalidowitz (Southington, Conn.) who took 34th place in a time of 23:43. Pride junior
Jackie Knoblock (Plymouth, Mass.) crossed the line in 24:41 for a 58th place finish followed by senior
Jessie Zaccaro (Washingtonville, N.Y.) (74, 24:51) and sophomore
Jess Borsotti (Westfield, Mass.) (84, 25:06) rounded out the top five for the Pride.
The SC women took ninth in the 29-team field scoring 235 points. Amherst won the meet with 71 points, followed by Tufts (73) and Williams (111).
On the men’s side, junior
Pat Gann (Guilford, Conn.) led the Pride to a 16th place overall finish as he took 30th place with a personal best time of 26:35 over the eight kilometer course. Gann was followed by junior
Nate McMahon (Millis, Mass.) who also set a personal best, 27:22, as he crossed the line in 76th place. Pride freshman
T.J. Potenza (Cranston, R.I.) took 99th (27:50), followed by freshman
Eric Nacsin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) (104, 27:55), and sophomore
Jeff Bartlett (West Newbury, Mass.) (121, 28:12) rounded out the scoring five for the Pride.
The SC men took 16th in the 38-team field scoring 415 points. Williams won the meet with 46 points, followed by Bates (71), and The College of New Jersey (149).
Both the men’s and women’s team are home next weekend as Springfield College hosts the New England Division III Regional Championships on Saturday, November 12 at Veterans Golf Course. The women’s gun goes off at 11:00 am while the men start at noon. The top five women’s teams and next five individuals, and top three men’s teams and next seven individuals will qualify for the NCAA Div. III National Championship in Delaware, Ohio.

Under Pennington’s direction, the Pride has recorded seven top 20 finishes at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and seven top 15 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
