Women's Volleyball Breezes Past Mount Holyoke, 3-0

Cassie Seymour Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - October 6, 2009 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team cruised to a three-game sweep over local-foe Mount Holyoke on Tuesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The Pride won by the game scores of 25-11, 25-10, 25-11.

The victory marks Springfield's ninth-straight win and brings the Pride's record to 18-2, 3-1 in league action. Mount Holyoke falls to 3-11, 0-5 in league play.

Springfield, which is still receiving votes in the weekly AVCA national rankings, hit .316 for the match as a team and was lethal from the service line, totaling 15 service aces in the victory.

Leading the way for the Pride was Sarah Lang-Rodean, who totaled 10 kills while hitting .450, while Lauren Torvi and Kim Giaquinto tacked on seven kills. Both Torvi and Lang-Rodean totaled a team-best three blocks. Kelsea Hellyar handed out 24 assists and posted six digs, while Meaghan Hart also added six digs. Cassie Seymour has continued to be a weapon from behind the service line as she posted an incredible eight service aces in the victory.

The Lyons were limited to a -.121 hitting percentage in the contest and struggled to get in an offensive rhythm throughout the night. Kathryn Brummer led the way with a team-best five kills and Rosa Marruffo registered seven digs.

Springfield opened up a quick 8-0 lead in the opening frame as Seymour rattled of five aces. The Pride never looked back, hitting .500 for the frame, and finished with seven aces as a team.

After a Springfield attack error made it 6-5 in favor of the hosts, the Pride reeled off a 13-2 run to take control of the second game. The run was capped off by a Bethany Stosz solo block and the Pride finished the 25-10 victory off with a kill from Giaquinto.

The final frame was close at the beginning as a Brummer kill gave the visitors a 7-5 advantage. However, the Pride attack was too much on the evening as it went on a 20-4 run to end the frame to complete the three-game sweep. Lang-Rodean and Torvi were especially strong in the third stanza as they combined for nine kills.

Springfield will return to action on Friday evening as it hosts the annual Tom Hay Invitational with a different twist as the Pride will have its eye on raising awareness towards breast cancer. SC will take on Westfield State at 5:00 pm on Friday before squaring off versus Plymouth State at 7:00 pm.
