Men's Swimming and Diving Place Four On Academic All-America Team
, July 16, 2003 – Five members of the Springfield College men’s and women’s swimming & diving program were named to the Division III Academic All-America team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, announced today.
The SC men ranked ninth among Division III schools with a 3.29 team grade point average (g.p.a.) and the Pride women ranked 55th in Division III with a 3.02 team g.p.a.
Sophomore Louis Arruda
, who hails from West Warwick, R.I.
, carries a 3.82 g.p.a. He finished ninth in the 200 freestyle (1:41.20), 19th in the 200 butterfly (1:54.92), and 21st in the 500 freestyle (4:40.64) at the NCAA Championships (March 20-22). Arruda, who holds two school records, swam to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship (Feb. 28 – March 2) in the 200 freestyle (1:42.27), and swam legs on SC’s first-place 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays.
Senior Dan Bartholomew
, a native of Willits, Calif.
, graduated with a 3.75 g.p.a. in physical therapy. He placed 15th on the three-meter board (375.15 points) and 16th on the one-meter (345.15 points) at the NCAA Championships. The senior captain finished second to teammate Shaw in both diving events at the NEWMAC Championship.
Senior All-American Alison Mellage
, a diver from Union, N.J.
, graduated with a 3.69 g.p.a. as a movement studies major. She capped an outstanding career by earning her seventh and eighth All-American honors at the NCAA Championships. She placed fourth on the one-meter board (375.95) and fifth on the three-meter board (420.80). Mellage won both diving events at the NEWMAC Championship and the women’s swimming and diving team captured its third-consecutive conference title.
Freshman Dan Moran
, who resides in Wilbraham, Mass.
, carries a 3.52 g.p.a. He was the NEWMAC Champion in the 1,650 freestyle (16:24.91) and the 500 freestyle (4:41.24). Moran finished 12th in the 200 butterfly (1:53.72) at the NCAA Championships.
Freshman Mike Shaw
, from Westfield, Mass.
, achieved a 3.9 g.p.a. earned All-American honors at the NCAA Championships for his third-place finish on the three-meter board (463.85 points) and sixth-place performance in the one-meter dive (418.35). Shaw won both diving events and set meet records at the 2003 NEWMAC Championship. For his efforts, he earned diver-of-the-meet honors.
Head Coach John Taffe
John Taffe enters his 25th season in 2013-2014 as the head coach of the men's and women's swimming teams at Springfield College. Under Taffe’s leadership, the Pride has returned to its status as one of the best collegiate swimming and diving programs in Division III. Read more

Diving Coach Peter Avdoulos
Peter Avdoulos is regarded as one of the top diving coaches in the nation, and will enter his 29th season as the diving coach for both the men's and women's programs in 2013-2014. The current NEWMAC Women's and Men's Diving Coach of the Year, Avdoulos has coached countless All-New England and All-American divers, as well as several National Champions. Read more
