Complete ResultsMiddlebury, Vt. -- April 7, 2012 -- Orlando Harvey and Ryan Ux topped Springfield College in field events at a three-way track & field meet Saturday afternoon at Middlebury College. The Pride placed third of three in the meet with Bowdoin claiming first with 157.50 points, Middlebury second with 137.33, and SC third with 117.16 points.
Harvey, a sophomore from Chicopee, Mass., and Ux, a junior from Nashua, N.H., were not the only members of the Pride winning events. On the track side, also winning were junior Garrett Sharnick (Oxford, Conn.) , senior Kevin Coyle (Bradford, N.H.), and junior Anthony Salvucci (Burlington, Mass.).
Harvey captured the shot put with a heave of 47-10 1/2. He placed right in front of freshman Mason Durant (Pittsfield, Mass.) who finished second at 44-11 3/4. Meanwhile, Ux placed first in the javelin with a toss of 202-even. In third in the javelin was sophomore Parker Ashton-Youngs (Tolland, Conn.) with a toss of 173-10.
Sharnick won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.72 seconds for SC. Coyle took the 400-meter dash in 50.23 seconds. Salvucci captured the 5000-meter run in 15:07.43.
Two others from SC also tied for first in the high jump. They were sophomore William Ferguson (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) and sophomore Dale DeCouto (Fall River, Mass.), each with heights of 6-2.
Others who did well on the day for Springfield included junior Ryan O'Connell (Middleboro, Mass.), who took a third in the 800-meter run in 2:02.34, and a fourth in the 1500-meter run in 4:01.32.
In the 5000, grad student Brian Fuller (Ludlow, Mass.) finished second in 15:09.72.
In the 400-meter hurdles, junior Nolan Manley (Monson, Mass.) took a fifth with a 1:00.42, while in the 3000-meter run, junior Zach Pietras (Ludlow, Mass.) placed second in 9:35.56, and sophomore Corey Hamel (Methuen, Mass.) finished fifth at 10:58.64.
In the men's triple jump, junior Julian delSolar (Dorchester, Mass.) finished fifth at 37-9 1/4. In the discus, Coyle placed second at 123-even. Durant was fourth in the discus at 117-08.
And finally in the hammer, sophomore John Dayton (Bolton, Conn.) had a throw of 147-10, finishing second.
Ken Klatka, just inducted into the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame in October, 2011, enters his 37th season as head coach of the men’s track and field program in 2012-2013. He ranks among the nation’s most successful coaches, with an overall record of 442 wins, 144 losses, and two ties for an impressive .753 winning percentage. Under his direction, Kevin Coyle '12 won the 2011 Division III Indoor Long Jump National Championship.
