Complete ResultsSpringfield, Mass. -- April 24, 2010 -- MIT captured its 10th straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Men's Track & Field team championship this afternoon at Springfield College's Blake Track in pleasant conditions. MIT has won 11 of the 12 men's track & field championships in NEWMAC history, including each one since 2001. The Engineers scored 249 points today, followed by Springfield College with 182.5 points in second, and by WPI with 133 points in third.
In fourth place was Wheaton with 113 points, followed by Coast Guard with 79.5, and Babson with 10.
One of the starring athletes on the men's side at this meet was Springfield College senior Steve Headley (Wilbraham, Mass.), who won both the 100 meters and 200 meters. He is the defending NCAA Division III national champion in the 100.
Others who won a pair of events in this meet included senior Stephen Morton of MIT in the long jump and triple jump, and senior Yermie Cohen of MIT in the 800 and 1500.
A total of six NEWMAC records were set by the men this afternoon. In the javelin, junior Vlad Sobes of MIT had a toss of 200-11, breaking Jeff Baker of WPI's 2008 record of 198-6. Baker, now a junior, finished second in that event today with a toss of 195-9.
Headley broke two NEWMAC records. By running 10.58 seconds in the 100, he first broke a record of 10.72 seconds that had been held by Lance Wagner of Wheaton since 2001. Headley then broke his own record in the 200, which he set just last year. He ran a time of 21.28 seconds today. A year ago, he ran 21.78 seconds.
In the 400 meter run, junior Mark Williamson of Wheaton broke his own record with a time of 48.18 seconds. Last year, he ran a time of 48.22.
Wheaton set two relay records today in the 4x100 and the 4x400. In the 4x100, Wheaton ran a 40.84, breaking Springfield's 2009 record of 41.51. In the 4x400, the Lyons smashed an MIT mark that had been around since 2000. Wheaton ran a time of 3:15.87 today. In 2000, MIT had run a time of 3:19.93.
The following finished first and second in each event. Thus, they have each earned First Team All-NEWMAC and Second Team All-NEWMAC accolades.

Under his direction, Kevin Coyle '12 won the 2011 Division III Indoor Long Jump National Championship.
