Women's Soccer Falls Just Short At Wheaton, 5-2

NORTON, Mass., Sept. 25, 2004- Springfield College threw a scare into second-ranked Wheaton College before the Lyons rallied for a 5-2 victory in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer match in Mirrione Stadium on Saturday.
This was SC's second-straight match against a highly ranked opponent. The Pride dropped a heartbreaker, 1-0, to No. 11 Amherst on Sept. 23. SC ended Wheaton's eight-match shutout streak by tallying a pair of first half-goals.
The hosts opened today's scoring in the 10th minute, when senior Beth Caromile converted a corner kick from senior Christy Schneider to put Wheaton in front 1-0. SC responded with a pair of quick goals from sophomore
Meg Mertzic (Barre, Mass.) and junior
Amanda Nealon (East Falmouth, Mass.) in the 12th and 24th minutes, respectively, but Wheaton freshman Lauren Konopka tied the game at 2-2 at the 25:00 minute mark.
Konopka struck again in the 36th minute to give the Lyons a 3-2 edge heading into the half and a lead that was not relinquished. Caromile was credited with the assist on the play. In the second half, Erin Brennan scored twice in a four-minute span to give the Lyons a three-goal advantage.
SC keeper
Christina Davis (Orange, Conn.) finished the game with three saves, while Wheaton goalie Emily Lipsky also had three stops.
